The easiest way to replace a broken water heater is to enlist the help of a plumber or other professional. They will have the expertise to complete the job with a minimal amount of effort and they can recommend what kind of water heater to replace your old one with. Using emergency cash from title loans can be a great way of alleviating costs. But what are title loans? Here at LoanMart, we have over a decade of experience with title loans. But before we talk title loans, here are some common problems water heaters have.

What are some common problems water heaters have?

One of the most common problems water heaters have is defective dip tubes. This is because between 1993 and 1997, almost all the dip tubes used by major water heater manufacturers came from the same supply company, and they were defective. These faulty tubes have a tendency to break or crumble into pieces of various sizes.

Dip tubes normally push cold water to the base of the water heater, so it can be heated up. If the dip tubes break or disintegrate, it can cause a few different problems.

  • Unevenly heated water – Because the cold water isn’t reaching the bottom of the tank, it may get sucked up with the fully-heated water.
  • Clogged strainers and filters – This can cause water flow issues.

You may be able to determine if your water heater was manufactured between 1993 and 1997 by looking at the serial number. The third and fourth digit of the serial number are often the year of manufacture. So if they are 93, 94, 95, 96, or 97, it’s possible your water heater could contain the defective parts.

If you do have a faulty unit from this period, you can replace it as normal and flush the faucet screens and filters throughout your house. Or you can simply change the tubes out, though you’ll probably have to flush the system.

Water heaters also have the same common issues present in any complicated appliance or machine. Loose seals can cause issues, as can things like broken thermostats. If it is an electrically-heated water heater problems with the electrical current can arise. If it is gas-heated, any problems with the gas lines can cause issues.

What sort of features should you look for in a new water heater?

There are a number of features you should consider when selecting a new water heater:

  • Gallon Capacity – How much water can it hold?
  • Recovery Rate – How many gallons of water can it heat per hour?
  • Dimensions – What is the size of the water heater?
  • Energy Efficiency Rating – What is the estimated annual cost of operation?
  • Gas or Electric – If you don’t have a gas line, you need to use an electric water heater

As each situation is unique, you’ll need to assess your personal requirements when selecting a new water heater. Things like the available space and the amount of water you are expecting to use will have a big influence on the type of water heater you select.

Once you’ve selected a new water heater you’ll need to dispose of the previous one. In some places, there are special disposal requirements that you will need to be aware of. Make sure you research those before disposing of your old heater.

What can I do to extend the life of my water heater?

There are a few things you can do to extend the life of your water heater:

  • Drain the water from the heater – If you do this twice a year it will remove sediment that may have collected and can cause corrosion. It also boosts efficiency.
  • Test the pressure-relief valve – Lift the valve’s handle and let it snap back. If it’s working, a jet of water will come out of the overflow drainpipe. If it doesn’t, the valve needs to be replaced. If you don’t, it might not function during a pressure buildup.
  • Lower the temperature to 120 F. This reduces the possibility of damage due to overheating.

Can I replace my water heater myself?

While you can potentially replace your water heater yourself, it’s a complicated process. Aside from having to wrestle a giant metal tank through your house, you’ll need to be comfortable working with your gas and/or electricity lines as well as your water. Even if you have a professional install your new water heater, you know should know enough to understand if you really need a new one. And if you do, you can understand enough to start looking for one that fits your needs.
